The VIA EPIA SP mainboard introduces the VIA CN400 Digital Media chipset to the Mini-ITX form factor for the first time, extending the feature set of the VIA EPIA Mini-ITX family to include support for DDR266/333/400 and even greater digital media performance on the rapidly emerging new generation of smart digital entertainment devices such as PVRs, set top boxes, and media centers. Targeting x86 consumer electronics devices, the Chromotion CE Video Display Engine of the S3 Graphics UniChrome™ Pro IGP graphics core features hardware-based MPEG-2 decoding and MPEG-4 acceleration for smooth playback of the most popular video formats,together with Adaptive De-Interlacing and Video De-Blocking advanced video rendering functions for unequalled image crispness.


 
Features

The VIA EPIA SP features the VIA C3 processor based on the C5P Nehemiah core with its integrated VIA PadLock™ Advanced Cryptography Engine (ACE) for high-speed encryption and decryption of the US government approved Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). The C5P Nehemiah core includes two VIA PadLock Random Number Generators (RNGs) that provide high quality entropy for security applications, such as key generation or hard disk scrubbing, without relying on precious CPU cycles to generate random numbers through software.

Additionally, the VIA EPIA SP supports an impressive range of high-speed storage and connectivity options, such as Serial-ATA, IEEE 1394 (Firewire), USB 2.0 and 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet. The VIA EPIA SP also offers support for various LVDS embedded LCD panels, has a PCI slot for expandability options, and is compatible with a full range of Mini-ITX power supplies and chassis, as well as FlexATX or bigger enclosures.

Power House without using much power December 28, 2007

As the other review noted, there is no support for the mpeg 4 acceleration in windows but the onboard video and audio are more than powerful enough when coupled with good RAM.  I love this board and all the features for the price.  I bought this back in early 2006 and have been using it since with no problems what so ever and the M1-ATX power supply has more than enough power to pump this bad boy, your screen, some hubs, and even a DVD drive to boot thanks to this boards low power consumption.

Plenty of power December 7, 2006

I jumped on this board the second I could get my hands on one.  I was totally hoping that the mpeg4 decoder that is built in would provide for the highest quality video for my car computer - but there are no drivers for windows!!  The board offers plenty of USB2.0 connections, the latest firmware supports 480x800 output (many boards do not) and doesn't make much heat.  You probably can get by with the 1.0GHz or 1.2GHz, but if you are one of those who likes to have the most power they can squeeze into their ride - this might just be the right board for you.
